The Interactive Patient Communication System

Dementia is a term for a subset of disorders that can cause memory loss in sufferers. One of the most common subsets of dementia is Alzheimer’s, which is a progressive physical degradation of the brain. Dementia is a progressive neurological disorder with progressive onset of memory loss, disorientation, personality changes, and loss of motor skills with no cure available for Dementia, rather the medical treatment focuses on palliative care.

An Interactive Patient Communication System (IPCS), targeted specifically for patients with impairment (eg Dementia). This solution will include three (fully integrated) products: an application for the patient, an application for the Caregiver (nurse/guardian) and a management studio for the caregiving organization (facility or independent user). The applications will be usable on any iOS/Android tablet while the management studio will be a cloud-based software accessible via the internet. This product will be used by both the caregiver and the patient allowing for 24/7 remote patient management/monitoring. This product will allow the caregivers to remotely manage their patient’s wellbeing and daily routines using real-time monitoring, automated communication processes as well as track the patient’s progressive condition through the product’s structured datasets and KPIs.

The Innovation

Our solution will be achieved using the following integrated products:

Patient Application

With prime focus on usability by people with progressive memory impairment or other dementia related conditions (eg. Alzheimer’s), the innovative application will cater for an interactive, monitored and customized communication platform.

Caregiver Application

With complete real time integration with both the patient application and cloud-based management system, the caregiver will be able to monitor and be notified of their patient’s activities remotely.

Management Studio

Both applications (patient and caregivers) will be connected to the patient management system to maintain, deploy and render information in real time as well as cater for period analytical needs.

Problem and Opportunity

Dementia is a progressive neurological disorder that affects memory, judgement, skills and behavior of a patient. There is no cure available for Dementia, rather the medical treatment focuses on palliative care. Caregiver face several pain points for taking care of dementia patients such as physical intervention, technology limitations, and service limitations. Our goal is to provide our clients with an IT product that can encourages and leverages remote care to impaired (eg Dementia) patients while enhancing the healthcare experience.

We are proposing an innovative solution for an Interactive Patient Communication System application to help the patient and the healthcare providers to manage, execute and help improve Care Plans for this disorder:

1. Patients

To help the Patient with remembering and executing their daily routines and/or ad-hoc tasks (constructed by their Caregiver, Guardian, Healthcare Provider) using notifications/reminders and alerts. This interactive approach ensures patients are notified of their daily routines while at the same time help patients improve their memory.

2. Healthcare Providers/Caregivers/Guardians

Clinics/hospitals, healthcare providers, patient’s guardians and/or other caregivers can create patient’s customized schedules, daily routines, monitor patient’s progress (be notified of completed, in progress or missed tasks) in real-time as well as through periodic reports. The application’s reporting system will allow caregivers to monitor the patient’s habits/execution of tasks over a selected period. Using the structured and accurate reporting data, caregivers will also be in a better position to assess the patient’s behavioral analysis based on predefined KPIs within the App as well as help with constructing patient’s unique care plan. The application will have the ability to integrate with clinical/hospital EMR systems (and other clinical technologies) and use industry standard coding systems to document any medical information.

3. The Customer Perspective (Patient and Caregiver)

Daily routines, schedules, their execution and real-time monitoring can be helpful for both the caregiver and the patient. A planned day allows caregiver to spend less time trying to figure out what to do and more time for focused, efficient and professional health services. At the same time, a well notified, instructive, guided and customized routine can provide meaning and enjoyment to the patient while encouraging safety measures within their routines.

A person suffering from progressive dementia will eventually need a caregiver’s assistance to organize their day. In the current world, a caregiver routinely works with patients to help them execute tasks like going for a walk, personal care (bathing etc.), taking medication, socializing, taking their meals. However, caregivers may not be available 24 hours a day or 7 days a week to assist their patients with these activities. This creates a significant challenge with providing efficient, safe and constantly monitored health care to dementia patients. Caregiver rely on various methods to collect, document and communicate schedules, routines, results and analytics to the care team, guardians and patients. This may lead to duplication of efforts and in-efficient use of time and resources.

Product or Solution

Caregivers will be able to provide Healthcare services remotely using the product’s targeted and cognitive measures that will reduce dependencies with physical intervention while enhancing safety. Caregiving organizations (facilities) will be able to transition from a “hands-on”, manual approach to a technology equipped, remote and automated approach with our product. This will prove to be a groundbreaking transition for caregivers. By using our product as a supplementary tool, our caregiver will be equipped to assist their patients 24/7 remotely to:

Remember (through real-time notification processes),
Recognize (using recognizable objects, design and layout)
Execute their customized Care Plans (using our proprietary AI driven rules engine to generate customized real-time, bi-directional communication).

With guidance/input by medical experts, our product will be designed for usability by impaired (Dementia) patients and utilize customized, recognizable, reaction generating alerts/reminders/notifications to the patient to trigger an action and register the response.
